- 1792 James Smith set up his shoe making business on the site that now houses City Hall
- 1919 It was decided that a new city hall should be built, to allow for the expansion of civic offices
- 1936 The foundation stone of City Hall was laid by the Lord Mayor of Norwich, Walter Riley
- 29th October 1938 City Hall was opened by King George VI to the largest gathering of citizens the city had ever seen
