When
Key dates in the history of Norwich Castle:
- c.1067 Building of Norwich Castle began
- c.1094 William II began the ornate masonry keep - it was completed by 1121
- c.1300 The keep was used as a gaol, holding debtors, petty felons, horse thieves, highwaymen and murderers
- 1834-39 The original Norman façade was replaced with the Bath limestone seen today
- 1894 The castle was opened as a museum and art gallery
