Key dates in the history of Norwich Castle:

  • c.1067 Building of Norwich Castle began
  • c.1094 William II began the ornate masonry keep - it was completed by 1121
  • c.1300 The keep was used as a gaol, holding debtors, petty felons, horse thieves, highwaymen and murderers
  • 1834-39 The original Norman façade was replaced with the Bath limestone seen today
  • 1894 The castle was opened as a museum and art gallery
