Go Elephants!

Norwich 12 was one of the lead partners in this summer's Go Elephants!, a free public art event which involved around 50 elephant sculptures on display around Norwich's public spaces. Each is totally unique, decorated imaginatively by local artists and community groups as part of an "urban safari".

Where's Elly?

All 12 buildings had a mini elephant which formed part of a trail aimed at 5-9 year olds.

In addition, two buildings hosted a life-size baby elephant:

Dragon Hall

Dragon Hall commissioned community artist Tim Edwards to create the "Camouflagephant" - an elephant that has been painted to blend in with its surroundings. The design was chosen largely because it mirrors the fact that Dragon Hall is a historical and cultural gem that is somewhat hidden in the heart of the city. It was placed near the brick wall that surrounds St Julian's Church between King Street and Rouen Road.

St John's Roman Catholic Cathedral

The elephant at St John's Roman Catholic Cathedral was designed by young local artist Amy Dibben, daughter of Norfolk landscape and marine artist Andrew Dibben. Amy produced a sensitive design, reflecting the livesimply ethos, which encourages people to think about living simply, living sustainably and in solidarity with the poor. It was sited on the terrace outside the Great North (Jubilee) doors, off Earlham Road. It is called "Ellie Vispim - The Tree of Life".

Go Elephants! auction

Go Elephants! was presented by The Forum Trust and Wild in Art and ran from 23 June to 31 August, after which many elephants were auctioned at a gala event with 75% of net proceeds donated to CLIC Sargent and The Born Free Foundation. The event raised over £200,000.

Camouflagephant now has a new home - Junior Farm at Wroxham Barns, after Ian Russell, Wroxham Barns Director, bought Cammi (her stable name) for £3,400 at the elephant auction. Wroxham Barns is one of Norfolk's most popular visitor attractions offering a range of shopping and crafts, together with activities for younger family members.
